A different perspective on the monthly cycle
Historically, medicine was a male domain and as men don’t have periods they didn’t understand what it’s like to have them. Consequently, women have been told that monthly suffering is just ‘how it is’, and we’ve come to accept that days of debilitating cramps, sharp abdominal pain, unpredictable mood swings, and deep fatigue are normal rhythms of female biology – especially if our mums suffered.
From the perspective of East Asian medicine, this couldn’t be further from the truth. While these symptoms are undeniably common, they are not normal.
A healthy, harmonious menstrual cycle should arrive on time, pass smoothly, and depart without upending your life. When it doesn’t your body is simply sending a clear message that things aren’t flowing smoothly.
The Concept of “Free Flow”
Your menstrual cycle relies entirely on the smooth, unhindered movement of Qi (energy) and Blood. The primary system responsible for orchestrating this elegant, monthly movement is the Liver network. In our medicine, the Liver is responsible for ‘smooth flow’, it ensures that everything moves at the right speed, in the right direction, at the right time. In fact, an ancient axiom in Traditional Chinese Medicine says:
“Where there is no free flow, there is pain; where there is free flow, there is no pain.”
Huang di Nei Jing – 1st/2nd century BCE
The liver is very susceptible to stress so our 21st Century lives with all the constant rushing, pressure of time, suppressed emotions, long hours at a desk, and a lack of quality sleep cause the Liver’s energy to tighten and constrict. We call this Liver Qi Stagnation.
The Physical and Emotional Mirror
Chinese medicine sees the mind and the body as indivisible, so when Qi stagnates, it’s not just physical processes that suffer but also the emotions:
- The Physical Tightness: Because the energy cannot flow smoothly through the pelvic pathways, it begins to accumulate, creating a kind of pressure. This manifests as the familiar, tight, gripping cramps before or during your period, abdominal bloating, and tender, swollen breasts.
- The Emotional Constriction: that same internal pressure disturbs the ‘shen’ – your ‘heart-mind’. You might experience a sharp rise in irritability, a feeling of being easily overwhelmed, sudden anxiety, or a wave of tearfulness just before the bleed begins. It is quite literally the feeling of being “wound too tight.”
How Acupuncture gets things moving
When you come into the clinic for menstrual discomfort, our first objective is to ease the constriction and remind the qi how to move freely again.
Acupuncture works by gently activating specific points along the body’s meridian pathways which signal the nervous system to shift out of a defensive “fight-or-flight” state and into deep, restorative recovery.
By selecting precise points that unbind Liver Qi and nourish the Blood, acupuncture helps to:
- Dilate and relax local tissue, easing uterine contractions.
- Encourage optimal blood circulation to the pelvic organs, supporting a smoother, more efficient clearance of the uterine lining.
- Soften the nervous system’s response to pain, effectively turning down the volume on cramps and cyclical migraines.
Over the course of a few cycles, many women notice a profound shift. The emotional turbulence begins to level out, the physical tension softens, and the arrival of Day One ceases to be a monthly crisis.
A simple pre-menstrual ritual
While clinical care provides the deep, energetic work your body needs, you can also support your Liver system at home—particularly in the week leading up to your period:
- Apply Intentional Warmth: The uterus thrives on warmth. Cold is said to contract, causing pain, warmth relaxes and encourages movement. Avoid cold liquids or raw foods during this phase, and put a warm (not hot) water bottle on your lower abdomen or lower back before the cramps even start.
- An Evening Foot Bath: A simple 15-minute soak in warm water with Epsom salts before bed draws excess, frustrated energy away from a busy head and down toward the feet, encouraging the smooth descent of Qi necessary for a comfortable cycle.
🌿Your cycle really shouldn’t be an inconvenience to be medicated into submission; it’s a reflection of your internal landscape. By listening to what the pain or discomfort is telling you and restoring the natural, free flow of your body’s resources, a ‘harmonious’ period is perfectly possible.
